I have had absolutely no luck in getting xinerama working on my system. I have a up1000 with a Matrox g400 card (32mb). I now hear rumblings that the second head on this card is not supported by X4.0. For the moment, I have given up until more documentation arrives. Have you tries the Xinerama Multihead HOWTO?
