clock skew detected, not really?

Now that I have a new Alpha running Debian I've started seeing
messages like:
make[4]: *** Warning:  Clock skew detected.  Your build may be
incomplete.

Yet:
$ date
Wed Dec 27 10:27:16 PST 2000

Did I miss something here?
