Jay, Thanks for you help on this. I tried both of your suggested changes to the configuration, but I still have the same error. Here is a summary of what I have learned (we use this machine for number crunching large and long jobs, so I don't get the chance to reboot very often)
1) turned off TULIP, left on DE4X5 which is what I was using on 2.2.18 2) I am using aboot 0.7-1 from the debian 2.2 distribution. This should be compatible, but just in case I set alpha_legacy_start_address. By doing both of these changes, I may have "over-corrected", perhaps I should try unsetting the legacy start address. The error I get is after aboot finds the kernel, uncompresses it, I get the message "aboot: ok, now starting the kernel..." then SRM gives the message halted CPU 0 halt code =5 HALT instruction executed PC=0 boot failure Again, the funny thing is the size of the kernel is much larger than before. Is there a file size limit for aboot to read the kernel ?
