Hmmm, I've got a DS20, and I can compile a working single CPU kernel with GCC 2.95.2. However, as soon as I compile an SMP kernel, it dies very early on in the boot process. I've tried all the 2.4.x kernels. Can you post your config file? Thanks, Edgar.
