You will need to do it on a 64 bit arch.  cross compiling from 32 bit
platforms will give you bad karma.  (According to a recent post by one of the
local gurus here)
For creating cross compilers, have a read through the debian-sparc archives,
there are a few threads on that.  and a success story.  I'll troll through my
archives and if I find anything soon, I'll post it to you.
