I have never been able to make this work here on my XLT300 using Alphabios...probably due mostly to ignorance on my part <g>. What I have done is make the boot-floppies and boot from them at the MILO prompt. Once you get the initial install screen up, you can select the CDROM for further installation of the base system and then the complete set of packages you want. If you discover a way to do it all from the CDROM, I would very much like to know...it "should" be possible. I have also installed Debian from the internet using only the two boot floppies (rescue and root) and the "network" install method. This works great if you have a fairly fast internet connection...i.e. DSL, Cable, T-1, etc. I find this method much shorter than d/l an ISO image, burning a CD, then using that for install. BTW, my Alphabios allows 3 different "boot" selections. The computer originally came with WinNT, which takes up one. I have used one of the remaining to boot to the milo prompt, and the last becomes my boot into Debian Linux. To get it to stop at the milo prompt, just copy milo and linload.exe to a small FAT directory (10-20 Megs??)and setup Alphabios to use that per the directions in the instructions for installation on a Alpha. Having the milo prompt quickly available has helped out tremendously whenever I have messed up my install and had to use the "rescue" diskette to fix things. Cheers, -Don Spoon-
