Thank you for your kind explaination and suggestions. I "think" I have is straight now.
On the BIOS issue... I have Alphabios on my XLT, and the only access I have ever had to any clock was via the "BIOS" to define "now" (time & date). I was lumping this in with the physical hardware "clock". I assumed that any Linux software program like NTP, NTPDAT, hwclock, etc. was just making calls to the BIOS... my mistake. I told you I was operating at a high level of ignorance <grin>.
