I had exactly the same error message the first time I saw aboot after
installing Sarge on my 500au. I'm not all that familiar with aboot so I
can't tell you what buttons I pressed but I found a list of available
boot options and amongst those was one that didn't appear to use a
compressed kernel image (pointing to a file that lacked the .gz
extension ISTR).

I chose that and it booted without a problem, never had the problem
reoccur on subsequent boots.
