I got this reply from the libc maintainer - can anyone
more involved with  Debian/alpha build stuff help him out?

The mainline libc, not debian alpha glibc.  But I guess adding debian alpha
NPTL is not difficult task - but (1) I have no access to the alpha machine
without appropriate privileges (2) alpha buildd is not
2.6 kernel.
