I'm using a 53c895 and it works just fine if I choose CONFIG_SCSI_SYM53C8XX_2. Tested with 2.6.8.1 and above. I've had problems with the old driver (I guess it was CONFIG_SCSI_SYM53C8XX) but always about 'wrong' detection of bus speeds, e.g. Fast-20 instead of Fast-40 and LVD instead of SE. Are you sure it's a driver issue? Maybe the 2.4 driver was just more tolerant towards faulty termination and cabling. Btw, I've set DMA addressing mode to 1TB (1), default tagged command queue depth to 16 and maximum number of queued commands to 128. Maybe that helps.
