If necessity is the mother of invention, then "MPlayer" killed her as far as moving forward with getting Helex Player working on the Alpha. Didn't realize "MPlayer" could handle the streaming audio formats in which I'm interested.
For anyone that cares (probably no one based on the amount of feedback received to date), the current MPlayer source builds just fine on Alpha with gcc-3.4.6. Support for building a ".deb" package is included.
