Steve's right about the wireless, quite often they just look like strange ethernet cards. Another option, and one I use because I had it lying around, is to convert an old AP into a bridge, using something like OpenWrt or dd-wrt. Then you use normal ethernet cards to connect to it. I have that in my setup. The reason why I don't use wires is because I'm renting the place.
