Hi, I'm the maintainer of python-qt4 and currently trying to get the latest version (4.4.2) into testing.
python-qt4 is notorious for its size and the problems it causes for compilers, this time it seems it hit alpha. If -fPIC is used, -mlarge-data is implied. I've also filed a bug with gcc-4.2 [1] The build failure only occurs for the debug build, not the normal one.
