Since the upgrade from KDE3 to KDE4, "plasma" reliably segfaults on KDE startup. See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=541402 for the details. If any Alpha users are able to run the KDE4 desktop, please reply to the list with the machine model and video card you're using: maybe a pattern will emerge from the fog :-).
Still having issues with gnome-settings-daemon too, but that's another story. At least GNOME works as well as it ever did, modulo the daemon problem(s). firefox-3.5.1 built from the mozilla.org sources works too.
