Started down the rabbit hole that is "gnome" package building :-(. Eventually ran into a build dependency conflict that required forcing the configuration of a built and installed-but-unconfigured package (libgtk-3-dev) to allow one of its dependencies (dconf-gsettings-backend) to be built. Not sure how this kind of thing gets resolved officially.
Continuing down the list of unsatisfied dependencies, can't build the various "d-conf" packages without "valac", so *that's* building as I type this.
