I have a similar problem too. I had the same problem with the previuos kernel update. As somebody suggested then, I logged in using the 2.6.8 kernel and editted the /boot/grub/menu.lst. I added the following line
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.9-9-amd64-k8
You need to put in the first sections for the 2.6.9-9 kernel, right after the kernel line.

See the bug reports about initrd-tools. Workaround: Add the missing driver to /etc/mkinitrd/modules and rebuild the initrd, e.g. by reinstalling the kernel image.
