There is a patch at the above link, get it and put in the xfree debian source tree under the directory debian/patches. Recompile and reinstall xserver-common and xserver-xfree86.
Thanks a lot! I had seen the patch earlier, but its description didn't sound to me like it would solve my problem. But it did.
I'm uploading my binaries to "http://intux.org/debian"; in case anyone wants to save him/herself the hassle of recompiling xfree86.
