I'm assuming you are using dchroot to run openoffice in the chroot?  For 
example you have something like this

/usr/bin/do_dchroot contains:

#!/bin/sh
exec dchroot -c ia32 -d "$(basename $0)" -- "$@"

and /usr/bin/openoffice is a link to /usr/bin/do_dchroot

On my system configured like this, I can do

$> openoffice 'holiday\ letter.doc'

and the document opens just fine...
