I had similar problems. I downloaded the 4.0 source code from the vnc site. It took some time to have the vnc (+xserver) compilation work but after that, I haven't had any problems running VNC.

vncserver just exits, I suspect because when you run Xvnc server it just segfaults. any Ideas?
