Well I know the AC97 on the nforce2 uses intel810 style access, so try snd-intel8x0 driver (the alsa driver), or i810audio (oss driver although I wouldn't use that one personally).
Perhaps nforce4 is similar that way.
I'm pretty sure you are right. My nforce3 board uses the ALC850 codec, and this is the way I got it working.
