After stopping lpd in the non-chroot, did you re-start it in the chroot? > Do I need to completely remove lpd? If so, how? (by removing > /etc/init.d/lpd?) No, but it will restart on reboot so you will have to do this little dance again. In the end, the CUPS solution sounds best to me.
