The bug was fixed months ago in GNOME's 2.9 branch (maybe the fix got into 2.8.3, but I can't say for sure; I know it's not in unstable). Wait for GNOME 2.10 to hit the unstable archive, which I think should be happening soon, or if you dare, use the packages from experimental.
