That sounds very strange. I use AllowUsers and AllowGroups on several servers and I have never had any problems. None of the machines are amd64 though. Does the 'xxx' user actually exist and is there nothing else preventing him from logging in? Btw. you don't need to reboot after changeing /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Just call /etc/init.d/ssh reload.
