I followed the procedure that you suggested. Apart from having to
manually install some dependancies which apt-get didn't seem to be able
to take care of (mostly used dpkg to install the deb files, I didn't
have any problems.
Nvidia card now working in X, and I'm very happy to have got this far!
Thanks for your help. I'm going to keep my notes for future use
(procedure will probably change in the end won't it).
