modinfo tg3 will tell you any switches there are, and there aren't really any (well, a debug enable switch, but thats it). I maintain a server with the same board on that pushes over 100Mbps for a good portion of the day, and have _no_ problems whatsoever with it. You have defective hardware somewhere. Have you run memtest86? Have you tried a cross-over cable instead of the switch? Have you tried the other two ethernet ports on the board? I strongly suspect memtest86/memtest86+ will find problems.
