I tried adding/deleting various modules to no avail; googling around
highlights some issues with udev in relation to soundcards. Whilst it
is probably resolvable, I think I'll revert to 2.6.14 until either it is
resolved or I have more time to spend on it.

Remember that when 2.6.0 was released, it was made clear that OSS was
deprecated and scheduled for removal. We're on 2.6.15 now - don't expect
too much time to be spent on OSS by the kernel developers.
