I tried that, but there's no sound from there either. The same hardware worked correctly with gentoo (compiled for the P-IV) a few days ago. The sound hardware is an Intel ICH5 using an Analog Devices AD1981B chip. I noticed that aumix complains "aumix: error opening mixer", but alsamixer allows me to fiddle with the volumes and I have xmms set up to use alsa.
