This is just for the record;
I got it to work with temporarily using a different network card.
The keyboard worked fine with 2.6.12 (from the netinst CD I used)
but the Intel 1000 NIC [Ethernet controller: Intel Corp.: Unknown device
109a (rev 01) ]
only started working when I used a newer kernel from backports.org
(2.6.15-SMP-EM64T)

Strange, installation on my em64t PC worked fine with a USB
keyboard. Try enabling 'Legacy USB support' (or similar) in the
BIOS, this will make the machine emulate a PS/2 keyboard in place
of the USB one. You can switch it back after installation.
Also I'm anticipating that there will be problems with the
"Intel 1000(?) gigabit" network card ?
Should be fine, sarge has the e1000 driver.
