I notice that some posts in this thread were from newer versions of
powernow-k8 (included in 2.6.18) so I upgraded. No change on the X2 4200
though.

I suspect the BIOS might also be involved. 2.6.18 gave me the following:

Sep 30 19:35:57 noddy kernel: powernow-k8: Found 2 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual
Core Processor 4200+ processors (version 2.00.00)
Sep 30 19:35:57 noddy kernel: powernow-k8: invalid freq entries 3900000 kHz vs.
 65535000 kHz
Sep 30 19:35:57 noddy last message repeated 3 times
Sep 30 19:35:57 noddy kernel: powernow-k8: 0 : fid 0xe (2200 MHz), vid 0x8
Sep 30 19:35:57 noddy kernel: powernow-k8: 1 : fid 0x2 (1000 MHz), vid 0x12

Speaking of 2.6.18, Debian's 2.6.18-1-amd64 + nvidia 8774 did not work
here - there was a kernel oops when X started. Anyone seen this? The
same NVIDIA version works fine with 2.6.17-2-k8-smp.
