Doesn't > that also make the system extremely difficult/time-consuming to restore? /var could definitly a problem since that's where the package database is stored... /usr on the other hand should not be a big problem (ok /usr/lib can make things more difficult)... but on the other hand... you _should_ have a backup (i'dont always have one...) and recently i restored a fucked up system (libc was broken after a crash while the security update was underway)... so there are always ways how to do things (though i could have lived without that expirience.
