Hello,

I guess I have missed something:

compiz can be used as a replacmeent of sawfish/metacity

sawfish is launched (defaults instalation)

So you have to *replace* the running window manage.

for that, try:
compiz --replace

I get:

/usr/bin/compiz.real: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Are you running sawfish in GNOME (or some other desktop envirnment, such as XFCE or KDE)? AFAIK, compiz won't run by itself, it has to be run within another desktop environment.
