Well according to
http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-PIXMA_MP150
it is a paperweight.

So yes a commercial driver may be the only choice, or one could go get a
cheap printer that actually works with linux and will stay working
because it has documentation.

At the price of the turboprint driver, you are quite a bit into the
price of a decent well supported epson inkjet (which also in general has
way better printer quality than anything canon has ever made) :)
