Some time ago I reported this as bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=337288 It seems it won't be fixed, grub isn't actively developed http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-legacy.en.html You should enable ia32 emulation or use the new grub package (1.96) instead.
