My bad --- I realized too late I had sent my local configuration.
The actual snippet is

        Alias /gitweb /usr/share/gitweb

        <Directory /usr/share/gitweb>
          Options FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI
          AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
        </Directory>

Ideally the pathinfo stuff should be conditional on whether the rewrite
module is already loaded.
