I've been seeing some of the problems mentioned in this bug report.
I have installed the 2.0.54-4 packages at http://lucifer.0c3.net/~adconrad/apache2-test/ and they seem to have fixed the bug.
Previously I would see apache go loose very quickly after doing anything involving ldap. This was repeatable. I have made several ldap transactions since installing these packages, and apache is fine.
I'll post if I see any more hangs.
