That looks like a bug in Kaffe in stable on sarge. Judging by 
the test results in the Debian sparc build logs, 1.1.6-3 or 1.1.7-2
should do better (0 regression test failures on 1.1.7-2 vs 17 on
1.1.5-2).[1] So if you have a chance to do it, try it with the Kaffe
package from testing.

Alternatively, you could try using SableVM, or java-compat-gcj.
