I've now upgraded to the packages in unstable: libapache2-mod-perl2 2.0.2-2.2 apache2-mpm-worker 2.2.3-2
The /etc/init.d/apache2 initscript still fails to start apache2. What I now experience, however, is that apache2-mpm-prefork (from Apache 2.2) also seems to segfault. From /var/log/apache2/error.log: [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7849 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7848 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7847 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7846 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7845 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7844 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7843 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7842 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7841 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7840 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Sun Oct 22 19:32:48 2006] [notice] child pid 7839 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) Downgrading to testing versions of both apache2 and mod_perl and using apache2-mpm-prefork instead of apache2-mpm-worker currently fixes this problem.
