Yes, it needs to be a crossover cable. A standard null modem will do. If you're building one yourself, I think it will suffice to cross over TxD and RxD and connect ground straight through; the flow control isn't required. See http://www.pin-outs.com/datasheet_11.html for the pin assignments. p.
