I use 'cu', from uucp. I imagine it has a package in ubuntu.
I also use cu when I can. It's an old BellLabs UNIX program (though
it may have been re-written for license reasons when it made the
transition to BSD and GNU). As such, it's in the old BellLabs UNIX
spirit -- now sadly in decline -- of doing one thing and doing it
well, with an absolute minimum of bells and whistles.
The nice thing about cu is that it just connects the serial line at
the specified baud rate and parity to your standard-in/-out, nothing
more -- no attempts to dial a modem that may or may not exist, no
guessing at baud rates, no bells, no whistles.
If anybody knows what command-line-options/configuration-file-fiddles
to use to make minicom do the same thing (i.e. "nothing") I'd be
grateful for a pointer.
