BTW, Adam, if memory serves, you are a PPC user? G4? Do you have any feel for whether an altivec optimized atlas for the g4 would be of interest to any Debian users? I've got the kernel, and can build it, and can get the package to do likewise, but it will require at least an assembler that knows altivec to compile, and preferably also the altivec patched gcc, either as the default gcc, or as an optional gcc. Would you have any interest in packaging the latter? It can be found at www.altivec.org. Would then be quite straightforward to get the optimized atlas for the g4. The assembly route would take a bit more work, but would not be insuperable, if there was interest.
(For those interested, altivec is to g4 as sse is to Intel Pentium -- vecotrized cpu instructions which increase performance in many cases by a factor of 2 or 3 over standard atlas performance.)
