I am part of the group which is converting Globus's GPT package format into rpm's. So far there is as you say no work on deb's. When I get around to it I want to look at Alien to see how feasible and easy it would be to add GPT to its list of package formats. That would be the best thing thing for everyone I expect if that could be achieved.
