We've had another report of possibly the same issue where the cause was identified. It's a known limitation of syslinux, which is documented in the installation guide. See the "Note" here: http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/i386/ch04s05.html.en What tftp server were you using? Does it work if you switch to tftpd-hpa. Sorry for the late reply.
