I reboot the system and at the grub display screen I do:

e

to get to the edit mode.

On the line to boot linux I add

nomodeset 1

and then

ctl-x

to boot with the options. Still I get the garbled
screen.

I have no way to get to a shell as root to do

apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree

command....

Any suggestions on the options to the boot? Is
'grub' overriding the options?

thanks,

chuck
