OK, attempt two with a brand new Sandisk USB drive. dd'ing the image directly works but I still get the same grub error, followed by a *nonblinking* cursor
The drive LED seemed to indicate that there was some activity, but many minutes later and there was no change. Yanking the drive didn't result in any error output, either.
