As long as it's not out of NEW, we can still change our minds.

The main argument in favour of "x.0" versioning was the possibility (see 
#682656) to co-install versions across multiple releases. Dropping the 
major version number from the package name would defeat this; were you 
arguing to move from "x.0" to "x" or dropping the versioning altogether?

I'm in favour of the status-quo as oldstable and stable have "x.0" 
already and moving to "x" would be confusing, IMHO.
