This fix does fix the issue so perhaps something is messed up somewhere
as I tried this and it works.

No, pulseaudio and pipewire have always been posing an issue. Possibly
by sheer luck you were previously not getting pipewire installed by
default, but for a graphical desktop, nowadays people would rather want
to have it.
