Comments/Problems:

Maybe I'm not understanding the point of pxebooting, but the initrd
included in pxeboot.tar.gz doesn't include any ide or lvm modules.
I downloaded kernel-image-2.6.7-1-386_2.6.7-2_i386.deb from the archive,
unpacked it, and copied over ide-core.ko, ide-disk.ko, ide-generic.ko,
ide-pnp.ko, and all of the md directory. I was really using this
install to teach myself how to set up pxe. The install itself went very
smoothly. Thank you for the effort put into this high-quality system!

Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.

The main problem here is that you used a too old version of the installer.
The kernel version used in RC1 is no longer supported which resulted in
the installer being unable to load the required modules from the mirror.
Congratulations on your creative and successful workaround.

If you had used either the pre-rc2 or a daily build version of the pxeboot
images (available from [1]), you would not have had these problems.
These newer versions use the 2.6.8 kernel instead of 2.6.7.

Closing this report as there were no real issues.

Cheers,

P.S. Note that we expect RC2 of the installer to be released this weekend.
