Hi, since amd64 and em64t cpus are capable of running both 32bit and 64bit it would be nice to have a multiarch debian-installer that lets the user choose which one to use. I know amd64 will not be part of sarge but hear me out please.
My idea is to add kernel-image-di-amd64 udebs to i386 and to add one more question '[ ] 32 bit | [ ] 64 bit' to D-I which is conditional on the booted kernel (only ask with a 64bit kernel) and passes "-aamd64" to debootstrap for 64bit. The D-I would still run 32bit but would install 64bit into target. Afaik nothing more is needed. Debian-cd can then add another kernel image to the CD and provide a linux-2.6-64 option at the boot prompt for people willing to experiment. What do you think?
