I just tried it again with kernel 2.4. It hangs when "detecting hardware for CD-ROM drives" while inserting sd_mod. Switching to the other terminal, the process "insmod sd_mod" is sitting there with status "D". In lsmod, the sd_mod module is shown as "(initializing)".
