This has nothing to do with vga settings. The problem is that the initrd does not load all modules necessary to mount the / partition. We will need more information on the system and the installation (like: what is the IDE controler; was RAID or LVM used) to find out what is missing. You can also try the latest _daily_ netinst build from: http://www.nl.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ It's possible the problem has been fixed in the mean time.
